Shadows of What Never Was

Ashfia Arannum

|

I hold a photograph we never took,

And read the pages of an unwritten book.

You walk beside me through the crowded street

Where two parallel lines were never meant to meet.

I dreamed a lot about "what could have been,"

Keeping the quiet love hidden within.

But the doors never opened, the keys were never made,

We watched the colors of a sunrise which was only fade.

It is strange to miss an unseen face,

To feel heavy in an empty space.

A silent tide pulled by a vanished moon,

A beautiful dream that ended far too soon.

My hands are open, gripping the air,

Chasing a ghost that was never truly there.

The heart still breaks, though it feels a little mad—

For we cannot lose what we never had.
